Use Chromebooks for student assessments

When set upwards properly, Chromebooks meet K–12 education testing standards and are a secure platform for student assessments. You can disable students' access to browse the web during an examination, external storage, screenshots, and the ability to print.

Both the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Smarter Counterbalanced Cess Consortium have verified that Chromebooks meet hardware and operating system requirements for online student assessments.

Before you begin

  • If you don't already have Google Workspace for Didactics, for each Chromebook that you want to utilise, go assistance in signing upward here.
  • Enroll each Chromebook in your school'south domain. Meet Enroll ChromeOS devices.
  • Move students taking the assessment to an organizational unit. For details, see Move users to an organizational unit of measurement.
  • To brand settings for a specific grouping of users or enrolled Chrome browsers, put the user accounts or browsers in a grouping or organizational unit. But user accounts tin can exist added to groups. For details, see Groups and Add an organizational unit of measurement.

Selection 1: School sets up Chromebook as a unmarried-app kiosk running the exam app

Requirement: Yous demand to accept the test available as a Chrome kiosk app. For more information, see Create and deploy Chrome kiosk apps.

  1. From the Admin console Home folio, get to Devices and then Chrome.

  2. Click Apps & extensions.
  3. Select Kiosks.

  8. Click Salve.

Automobile-launch setting for a kiosk app

  • If Motorcar-launch kiosk app is not configured, then the student sees a carte of kiosk apps in the system tray on the sign-in screen. The pupil must select the advisable kiosk app to launch it and accept the examination. After the test is complete, the student tin exit the kiosk app and sign dorsum into a user session.
  • If Auto-launch kiosk app is configured, when the device next starts, it immediately loads the kiosk app.

Option two: Testing provider sets upwards domain and student accounts for assessment

Steps for the provider:

  1. The testing provider creates a separate domain, owned past the provider.
  2. The provider creates educatee accounts.

Steps for the school's IT ambassador:

  7. Apply security measures for users and browsers.
    1. Click Settings and then Users & browsers.

    2. For Incognito mode, select Disallow incognito mode.
    3. For Screenshot, select Do not allow users to take screenshots or video recordings.
    4. For URL blocking, prepare Blocked URLs to block all URLs with a wildcard (*). And set Blocked URL exceptions for the cess URL and whatever other tools the student is allowed to admission. Learn more.
    5. For Printing, select Disable press.
    6. For External storage devices, select Disallow external storage devices.

Steps for the educatee:

  1. Using the username and password from the provider, sign in to the Chromebook.
  2. Accept the exam.
  3. When the test is complete, sign out of the Chromebook.

When a pupil signs out, the device is wiped.

More than security information:

In addition to Chrome's native management capabilities listed above, some cess providers may too choose to deploy their ain Chrome extensions to add additional controls, such as tools to verify who'southward signed in to the device and additional reporting. Option 3: Schoolhouse sets up the assessment with managed guest sessions on devices

Chrome version 73 and later.

Before y'all begin

  • Put ChromeOS devices in the organizational unit where you configure managed invitee session settings. For details, encounter Move a Chrome device to an organizational unit. For information on managed guest sessions, see Managed invitee session devices.

For managed ChromeOS devices.

  1. From the Admin console Domicile folio, go to Devices and then Chrome.

  2. Click Settings and then Managed guest sessions.
  3. To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organizational unit.
  4. Side by side to Managed guest session, select Let managed invitee sessions.
  5. Enter the name that yous want your users to see for the session.
  6. Configure managed guest session settings:
    1. (Optional) To gear up a specific amount of time for the exam, select Maximum user session length and enter a time.
    2. For Idle settings—Ready the idle fourth dimension in minutes to at least 15 minutes.
    3. For Incognito mode—Select Disallow incognito manner.
    4. For Screenshot—Select Disable screenshot.
    5. URL blocking—For URL blocklist, enter https://* to block all URLs. For URL blocklist exceptions, enter the assessment URL and whatsoever other URLs that the student can access during the assessment.
    6. For Press—Select Disable press.
    7. For External storage devices—Select Disallow external storage devices.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Choose the apps and extensions that you want to install. For details, run across Automatically install apps and extensions.
  9. Prevent students from accessing the test URL outside of the managed guest session:
    1. From the Admin console Home folio, go to Devices and then Chrome.

    2. Click Settings and then User & browsers.
    3. To apply the setting to everyone, exit the top organizational unit selected. Otherwise, select a kid organizational unit.
    4. Scroll to URL blocking.
    5. For URL blocklist, enter the assessment URL.
    6. Click Save.

Brand certain that students utilise the managed invitee session to take the test and don't sign in to their Google Business relationship. When students finish the test and exit the managed invitee session, the session is wiped from the device.
